And they sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites and told them to say: let me pass through your country. We do not wish to turn into your fields nor your vineyards, nor drink from your wells. The highway we wish to follow until we have passed through your country. However, Sihon did not permit it and gathered his warriors and moved against Israel in the desert. Once he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel. However, they defeated him with the sharpness of the sword and took his land from Arnon to the Jabbok as far as the Amorites, which reached to Jaser. Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Hesbon and all the settlements. Hesbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites and he had fought with the king of the Moabites, won all his land from them as far as Arnon, thus one says in song:
“Come to Hesbon, that one may build and raise the city of Sihon;
For fire issued from Hesbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, it devoured Ar in Moab and consumes the heights of Arnon.
Woe to you Moab!
You people of Chemosh are lost; his sons were slaughtered as they ran and his daughters captured and taken to Sihon, kind of the Amorites
His majesty is eradicated from Hesbon to Dibon; it is destroyed as far as Nophah, as far as Medeba.
