After Moses dispatched them, he said: Look at the land, go up into the south of the land to the mountains, and see what the people are like, whether strong, weak, few or many. Whether good or bad, what there are for cities, whether tents or villages or permanent homes; See how their floors are, whether sturdy or meager, and whether there is wood there. Bring some of the fruit of the land. It was, after all, around the time of the first grapes in season.

And they searched the land, from Zin-Rehob where one goes towards Hamath from. They came up into the south till Hebron, because Ahiman, Sesai and Talmai lived there, the sons of Enak. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. And they came to the stream Eshcol and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they put it between two upon a pole, also taking pomegranates and figs. The place is called stream Eshcol after the grape.
They explored for forty days, then they turned back and came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of Israel in the wilderness of Paran towards Kadesh, and brought the whole community. They said: Milk and honey flows wonderfully there and these are its fruit. The Amalekites live in the south, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites in the mountains. The Canaanites live near the sea and in Jordan. Caleb pacified the people who were angry at Moses, and said: Let us go up there and capture it, for we can overcome it. But the men who had gone up to see it thought that those people were too strong. And they set off a rumour: The land devours its inhabitants and there are men of great stature. We even saw giants. We were like grasshoppers to them, sons of Anak, the race of giants.
