On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud arose from the residence of the law. And the children of Israel left, and the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran. So they set out for the first time according to the word of the Lord through Moses. The banner of the sons of Juda broke first. Host after host.

And Moses said unto good brother Hobab, the son of Reguel of Midian: We are setting out into the land which the Lord gives us. Come with me now to do good to you. No, he said, I will go to my country unto my kindred. And Moses said: Do not leave us, because you know where we must encamp in the desert. You are our eyes. Whatever the Lord does good to us, we will do good to you!
So they went down the mountain of the Lord on a three-day journey, to show them where they should rest. And the cloud was above them by day, when they set forward from the camp. When the ark set forward, Moses said: Lord, arise, that thine enemies be scattered, and all they that hate thee flee before thee.
