And the leaders of the tribes of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir who was Manasseh’s son from the tribe of the sons of Joseph came to Moses and the princes, the leaders of the Israelites and said:
The Lord has commanded our leaders that the land you shall inherit shall be given to the Israelites by lots. He has also commanded that the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad shall be given to his daughters. When a man from the Israelites takes on of them as wife the portion of our father will decrease and as much as they have will become the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry so that our inheritance becomes smaller. When the year of the jubilee then comes for the Israelites then their inheritance will become the inheritance of the tribe into which they have married. So the inheritance of our fathers will become smaller.
Moses said: the tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken judgmentally. This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them marry whoever they wish, only they should marry from among the tribe of their father so that the inheritance of the Israelites should not go from one tribe to the other for every Israelite should keep hold of the inheritance of the tribe of his father. Every daughter who receives an inheritance shall marry among the tribe of her father so that it remains with the tribe.
As Moses had commanded, thus the daughters of Zelophehad did; Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milkah and Noah. They married the sons of their uncles.
These are the commandments and the judgments that the Lord proclaimed to the Israelites through Moses in the Jordan valley.
