However, God was wrathful that he went with them. To oppose him, an angel of the Lord blocked his way. 2 peasants were with him. And the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing on the path with a naked sword it its hand. Then it went from the path into the field. However, Balaam hit it to bring it back onto the path. Then the angel stepped into the path between the vineyards for there were walls on both sides. When the donkey saw the angel it pressed against the wall and pinched Balaam’s foot. Then he hit it more. Then the angel went to a narrow place where there was no room to turn. Then Balaam’s wrath rose and he hit the donkey with his stick. And when the donkey aw the angel of the Lord it fell to its knees beneath Balaam.
Balaam’s wrath rose and he hit the donkey with the stick. The Lord then opened the donkey’s mouth and spoke to Balaam: “what have I done to you, that you have hit me three times?” “How you’re treating me, if I had a sword I would kill you.” The donkey spoke: “am I not the donkey you have always ridden until this day. Was it ever my way to treat you like this?” “No!” Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord with the sword. And fell face down. And the angle of the Lord spoke to him: why have you hit your donkey three times, behold, I have set out to oppose you for your way is wrong. The donkey saw me and turned away three times, otherwise I would have killed you and let the donkey live. Then Balaam spoke to the angel of the Lord: I have sinned, I didn’t know that you were standing in front of me. Now that you don’t like it, I want to turn back. The angel of the Lord said to him: go there with the men, but talk of nothing but what I tell you. So Balaam went with Balak’s princes.
When Balak heard that Balaam had come he came to meet him in Ar in Moab and said to him: “Did I not summon you, why didn’t you come. Do you think that I could not honor you?” “Behold, I have come to you to speak what God has said to me.” So both went to Kiriath and Huzoth. Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep and sent them to Balaam and the princes who were with him.

In the morning Balak took Balaam and led him to Bamoth Baal so that from there he could see the entire people of Israel.
