And when the angel stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented of the evil and he said to the angel, It is enough, withdraw your hand.
But the angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. When David saw the angel who struck the people, he said to the Lord, “I have sinned. But what have these sheep done? Let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.”
And Gad the prophet came to David and said to him that day, “Go up, build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah.” But when Araunah saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he fell before him on his face. “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
David said, “To buy this threshing floor, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may turn away from the people.”
Araunah said, “Let my lord the king take as he pleases. Behold, the cattle, the threshing instruments, the firewood for the burnt offering, the goats and everything.”
But the king said, “I will buy it from you for a price.” David paid 50 shekels of silver for it, he built an altar to the Lord, who was merciful to the people again…
