At the time when the kings go out into the field, David sent Joab and his men to ravage the land of the Ammonites and to besiege Rabbah. At evening David, who had stayed at home, arose from his bed and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, when he saw a woman bathing who was very beautiful. David sent for her, Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hittite, and took her to lay with her. For she had just been purified from her uncleanness. And she became pregnant. David sent to Joab: “Send me Uriah!” He did so and Uriah came to David and David asked him about the army and the battle. “Go down to your house and wash your feet!” But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house. And Uriah said, “The ark and Israel and Judah are sleeping in tents and the soldiers are in the open field, how then should I go to my house and lie with my wife?” And David drank with him and made him drunk. The next day, he sent Uriah with a letter to Joab The letter said, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hardest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.” And Joab did so. Uriah and some men of Israel died. Then Joab sent a message to David, saying “The men prevailed against us, and came out against us into the field and even Uriah died there.”
