When the Philistines heard David was anointed king over Israel, they all went up to seize David. When they were in the valley of Rephaim, David inquired of the Lord, whether he should go against the Philistines. And God the Lord said, “Go up against the Philistines, for I will certainly deliver them into your hand.” And David struck them at Baal Perazim (= Lord of the breakthrough). And they left the images of their idols there and David took them away.
The Philistines came again to the valley of Rephaim. David inquired again of God, the Lord, who said, “You shall not go up to meet them, but come around behind them and attack them in front of the mulberry trees. And When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then make haste. For then the Lord has gone out before you to strike the Philistines.” David did so and struck them from Geba to Gezer.
