When Ishbosheth heard that Abner was dead, he lost courage and all Israel was troubled. Two captains of the raiding bands, Baanah and Rechab, the sons of Rimmon of Beeroth, of the children of Benjamin came to the house of Ishbosheth, who was sleeping at the hot time of the day on his bed. The gatekeeper was also sleeping after sifting the wheat. They struck him dead as he was laying on his bed and beheaded him and brought his head to David in Hebron, “Behold, the head of Ishbosheth, who sought your life. The Lord has avenged the king today.” But David answered, “When someone told me Saul was dead, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. And you wicked men have slain a righteous man in his bed.” And David commanded to have them killed. Then they cut off their hands and their feet and hanged them beside the pool in Hebron. But they took Ishbosheth’s head and buried it in Abner’s grave
