Joab came back with plunder from a raid. But Abner was not with David in Hebron and Joab made accusations against David. Then Joab sent messengers after Abner to bring him back from the well of Sirah. But when Abner was returning, Joab took him aside into the gate to speak with him in private, and he struck him there in his body, so that he died for the blood of his brother. When David heard of it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless, this is on the head of Joab, let there not fail from his house one who has a discharge, who is a leper, who leans on a staff, or who lacks bread.”
“Tear your clothes, mourn for Abner, for a prince, a great man has died.”And David followed the bier to the grave in Hebron and wept. “The sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May the Lord reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
