But when Saul came out of the cave, David came out after him, “My lord and king!” and bowed before Saul with his face to the earth, “Why do you listen to men’s words, who say, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you?’ Behold, today your eyes have seen how the Lord had delivered you into my hand. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. See, my father, here is the corner of your robe in my hand, which I cut off. I am pure before you. I have not sinned. But you hunt me, to take my life. ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness,’ but my hand will not be on you. May the Lord judge between me and you, and plead my cause against you.” And Saul came to his senses and said to David, “You are more righteous than I. You have let your enemy go his way in peace. Behold, I know that you will be king over Israel. Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not destroy my lineage.” And David swore this to Saul.
