When David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob, the priest was horrified because he was alone. David said he was there because of a secret matter. “Have you any bread?” “Only holy bread. It may only be eaten by those who have kept themselves from women.” David said, “This I have done.” And he was given bread. But Doeg the Edomite, the overseer of Saul’s herds, was there.
David said to Ahimelech, “Give me a spear or sword. I have no weapon with me.” “The sword of Goliath the Philistine is behind the ephod (the priest’s apron).” David said, “Give it to me.”
And David arose and fled before Saul to Achish the king of Gath.
But the servants of Achish were suspicious of David. David was afraid and he pretended to be insane and raged against the door of the gate and let his saliva flow down his beard. So Achish believed he was insane and David went on his way.
