The Philistines encamped to battle between Socoh (Judah) and Azekah in Ephesdammim. Saul encamped in the valley of Elah and went to battle against the Philistines. The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and the Israelites stood on the mountain on the other side, and there was a valley between them. A giant came out of the ranks of the Philistines, whose name was Goliath of Gath. He was six cubits and a span tall. He had a bronze helmet and a coat of mail weighing 5,000 shekels of bronze. He also had bronze armor on his legs and a javelin with a shaft like a weaver’s beam, and its head weighed 600 shekels. His shield bearer went before him. “Choose one from yourselves, you servants of Saul, and let him fight me. If he kills me, then will we will be your servants. If I kill him, then you will be our servants.” When Saul heard this, they were all afraid.
