And Nahash the Ammonite came up and besieged Jabesh in Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us and we will serve you.” Nahash said, “The covenant shall be that I gouge out all of your right eyes. They said to him, “Give us seven days, so we may send messengers into our country for help. If no one comes, we will come out
to you.”
And behold, Saul came from the field behind the oxen. When he heard it, he was very angry. He took a pair of oxen and cut them in pieces. Then he sent messengers throughout the country to put together an army. But he told the men of Jabesh he would come tomorrow. And Saul divided his army into three companies and they struck the Ammonites and scattered them all.
