Once you spoke in visions: I have crowned a hero as king – David, my servant, and anointed him with holy oil. My hand shall be established with him, and my arm will strengthen him. All who hate him I will beat down. I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers. He will call to me: “Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.” I will also appoint him to the highest kings of the earth. I will keep my loving kindness for him forever more, and stand by him. His offspring will endure forever and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, I will punish their sin with the rod. I will not remove my covenant with them. I will not alter what my lips have uttered.
I will not lie to David. His throne is like the sun, established like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.
But you have rejected and spurned, and been angry, and broken the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust, and broken down his walls, and brought his strongholds to ruin. He has become a reproach to all – his enemies plunder him and rejoice. You turn back the edge of his sword, you have denied him victory in battle. You have ended his splendor, thrown down his throne to the ground, and shortened his days. You have covered his youth with shame. Lord, remember the reproach of your servant, and how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the peoples with which your enemies reproach me. They have mocked the steps of your anointed one. Blessed be the Lord forever more. Amen, and amen.
