Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth. What our fathers have told to us of great deeds, of miracles, and of laws, we will not hide from our children. He has split the rock, so that water gushed out, caused streams to spring up. The people tried God, and demanded sustenance, bread, and meat, and to set the table in the wilderness. God was angry, but he commanded the clouds; he rained down manna on them.

They ate the bread of angels. He caused the east wind to blow in the sky, and guided the south wind. He rained meat on them as the dust, winged birds as the sand of the seas. He let them fall in the middle of their camp. They had everything they wanted, but their desires were not satisfied. And for all this, they still sinned. Therefore God let their years run out like a breath, and be full of terror. Then, when he killed them, they inquired after him. But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. Their heart was not right with him. But he, God, being merciful, forgave them. How often did they rebel against him in the wilderness, and grieved him again and again? They took his powerful hands when he freed them from the oppressors through signs: rivers and streams became blood, flies, frogs, locusts, hail, and plague came.

He struck down all the firstborn in their tents, and then he led his own people out like sheep and guided them through the wilderness. Their enemies all drowned in the sea. He brought them to their land and let them live in tents. But they did not keep God’s commandments; they fell away from him, treacherously. When God saw this, he was angry,
