And the whole congregation protested and shouted, and the people wept all night. And all the children of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron: Oh why did we die in Egypt and have to die in this wilderness? Why does the Lord dishonour us, that our wives and children should become prey? Let us, one said, choose a leader and go back to Egypt. But Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole assembly of Israel, and Joshua, the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, tore their clothes and said to all of the congregation of Israel: The land which we passed through is very good, nd if the Lord finds delight, he will give us this land of milk and honey. Do not secede me from the Lord and do not be afraid of the people of this land, for we will consume them like bread. Their protection has yielded to us. The Lord is with us.

The people said that they should stone them.
And the Lord appeared over the tabernacle to all the children of Israel. And the Lord said to Moses: How long will these people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, despite all the signs I give them? I will smite them with pestilence and destroy them, and make a nation for you that is greater and mightier than this.
But Moses said unto the Lord: Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought these people in thy might from among them. Even the inhabitants of this land will say that thou, O Lord, go before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night. If you killed them now as one would a single man, then the nations would doubt you, and would say: The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land that he had sworn to them. That’s why he slaughtered them.Let your power, O Lord, be great. The Lord is patient, you said, and of great mercy.
Do not forgive misdeeds and transgression, but also do down to the third and fourth generations of children. Forgive, O Lord, the sins of the people with thy mercy from Egypt even now. And the Lord said: I have forgiven them, as you have requested, but it should be true that all the men have not paid attention to my signs, and none of whom shall see the land which I swore to give to your forefathers.
Also none who have blasphemed. Only my servant Caleb, who holds a different spirit, will I bring into the land into which he has come, and his descendants shall capture it, while the Amalekites and Canaanites dwell in the planes. Go to the Red Sea tomorrow, on your way back on your journey.
