Nebuchadnezzar set Gedaliah, son of Ahikam over the people who were left. Now when the captains of the armies and their men heard that Gedaliah was governor, they came to him at Mizpah, even Ishmael and Johanan, and Seraiah, Jaazaniah and their men. Gedaliah swore to them, saying, “Do not be afraid of the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it swill be well with you.”
But in the seventh month, Ishmael came with ten men and they killed Gedaliah and the Judeans and Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah. And the people, small and great, and the captains of the armies rose up and went to Egypt because they were afraid of the Chaldeans.
