In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah became king of Judah. He was sixteen years old, and he reigned in Jerusalem in Judah for fifty-two years. He did what pleased the Lord, as Amaziah had done, but without removing the high places. Azariah was a leper until his death and Jotham his son ruled over all the court and he became king when his father Azariah was buried with his fathers in the city of David.
End of the Assyrian captivity
In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam, became king of Israel and he reigned in Samaria six months. He did what displeased the Lord, as his fathers had done. Shallum conspired against him, killed him and reigned in his place. For the Lord said to Jehu, “Your sons shall sit
on the throne to the fourth generation.” Shallum became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah, king of Judah, and he reigned one month in Samaria. Then Menahem went up from Tirzah and killed Shallum and became king in his place. Menahem attacked Tiphsah and all who were in the city and he ripped up all their women who were with child.
In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah, Menahem, son of Gadi became king over Israel for ten years in Samaria. But he did what displeased the Lord. Pul, the king of Assyria, came against the land. Menahem taxed every rich man for fifty pieces of silver and gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, so his hand would be with him to confirm his hold of the kingdom. So Pul of Assyria went back home. Menahem slept with his fathers and his son Pekahiah became king in his place.
In the fiftieth year of Azariah, Pekahiah was king over Israel for two years. He did what the displeased Lord. Pekah plotted against him and killed him in the tower of the king’s house with his fifty Gileadites and he became king in his place.
In the fifty-second year of Azariah, Pekah the son of Remaliah was king for twenty years in Samaria. He did what displeased the Lord. In the days of Pekah, Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and carried their people off to Assyria. And Hosea conspired against Pekah and killed him and was king in his place in the twentieth year of Jotham son of Uzziah.
