In the second year of Joash, son of Joahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah was twenty-five years old and he became the king of Judah. He reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. He did what pleased the Lord, yet not like David his father, but like his father Joash. He did not remove the high places, where they still burned incense and sacrificed. When he had his kingdom in his hand, he killed the servants who had killed his father. But he did not kill their children, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children for the fathers’ sake, but everyone shall die for his own sin.” Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, took the city and named it Joktheel. He sent messengers to Jehoash, “Come here, let’s look one another in the face.” Jehoash sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle in Lebanon sent to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife.’ But the beasts of Lebanon trampled down the thistle. Be contain with your glory and stay at home! Do not look for misfortune so that you fall and the land of Judah with you.” But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash went up and they faced one another at Beth Shemesh in Judah. And Judah was defeated by Israel. And every man fled to his house. Jehoash captured Amaziah and took him to Jerusalem, where he broke down the entire four hundred cubit length of the wall from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate. He took all the gold and silver and the vessels that were in the house of the Lord and the king’s house. He took hostages and returned to Samaria. And when Jehoash died, his son Jeroboam became king of Israel. Amaziah lived another fifteen years. But they conspired against Amaziah in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish and they followed him and killed him there. Then they buried him in Jerusalem with his fathers. His son Azariah was made king.
