Elisha became sick with the illness of which he died. As Joash came to Elisha
and wept over him, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows. Put your hand on the bow and open the window to the east.” Elisha laid his hand on Joash hand and commanded, “Shoot! An arrow of victory by the Lord against Aram. You will strike the Arameans in Aphek until you have consumed them. Take the arrows, strike the ground!” And he struck three times, and stopped. Elisha was angry with Jehoash. If he had struck five or six times, he would have struck them that many times. But now he was to only strike the Arameans three times. When Elisha died and they had buried him, bands of the Moabites raided the land year after year. And as they were burying a man, behold, they saw a band of raiders and they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. When the man touched Elisha’s bones, he became alive again, and stood up on his feet. Hazael oppressed Israel greatly, but the Lord showed mercy because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Hazael died. His son Ben Hadad became king of Aram. Joash won back the cities that Ben Hadad won in the battle and defeated them. Joash struck them three times and recovered the cities.
