Elisha called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Put on your belt and take this vial of oil, and go to Ramoth Gilead. There you will see Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat. Let him rise up from his companions and
take him into a room. Take the vial of oil and pour it on his head, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I have anointed you king over Israel.” ’ Then flee out the door and don’t wait.”
And the son of the prophets did what he was told, so the newly anointed king would avenge the blood of the servants of God and strike the house of Ahab and cut off every male of the house of Ahab. The dogs will eat Jezebel in the field in Jezreel, and no one shall bury her.
Jehu went out of the room to the people, who asked him what had happened. Jehu told them and each man put on his clothes in haste before him. And they blew the trumpets, saying, “Jehu is king!” So Jehu conspired against Joram. But Joram was at war with Hazael king of Syria, and had returned to Jezreel to heal from his wounds from the battle against the Syrians. But Jehu let no one escape from the city to go to Jezreel to tell the news there. Jehu got in his chariot and went to
Jezreel. Ahaziah, king of Judah was visiting Joram. Now, the watchmen on the tower saw Jehu’s dust cloud as he came. Joram said, “Take a horseman to meet him and ask, ‘Is it peace?’ ” When Jehu met the rider, he said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and follow me!” The watchman saw this and said, “The messenger isn’t coming back.” Joram sent a second rider to Jehu. But he said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and follow me!” The watchman saw it and said again: “The messenger isn’t coming back. The driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.” And Joram said, “Get the chariot ready.” And Joram and Ahaziah of Judah, each in his chariot, drove to Jehu in the field of Naboth the Jezreelite. When Joram saw Jehu, he asked, “Is it peace?” He said, “Peace? There is no end to your mother’s idolatry and witchcraft!” And Joram turned around and fled, and said to Ahaziah, “This is treachery!” Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between his arms and the arrow went through his heart and Joram collapsed
in his chariot. Jehu ordered his horsemen, “Throw him into the field of Naboth, because I remember how you rode behind Ahab his father. Surely I will revenge the blood of Naboth and his children in this field.” Ahaziah fled to Beth Haggan. Jehu pursued him and they struck him at the heights of Gur and he fled to Megiddo, where he died. His men buried him with his fathers in Jerusalem in the city of David. Jezebel painted her eyes and adorned her head, and looked out the window. When Jehu came to the gate, she asked him, “Do you come in peace, Zimri, murderer of your master?” He lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Two or three servants looked out at him. Jehu said, “Throw her down!” So they threw Jezebel down and the wall and the horses were sprinkled with her blood, and they trampled on her. Jehu refreshed himself with food. Then he said, “Bury her, for she is a king’s daughter.” But when they went to bury her, they found only her skull, hands and feet. So the word of the Lord was fulfilled, that the dogs would eat her and that she would become dung and manure on the field.
