Ben Hadad, king of Aramea, led his army up to Samaria to besiege it. There was a great famine.
They besieged it until a donkey’s head was worth eighty shekels of silver and a handful of dove’s dung five silver pieces. As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him and asked him for help. And he said, “Isn’t the Lord helping you? Where could I get help for you? From of the threshing floor or from the wine press? What is your problem?” She said, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son and we will eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ So we boiled my son and ate him. And I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, so we can eat him.’ And she had hidden her son.” When the king heard the woman’s words on the wall, he tore his clothes. Then everyone saw that he was wearing sackcloth underneath. He cried out, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today.” Elisha and the elders were sitting in his house. The king sent a man to him. Before he got there, Elisha spoke to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent to cut off my head? Make sure when the messenger comes that you shut the door, and hold the door shut against him.” As Elisha was still speaking to them, behold, the king came to him and said, “Behold, this evil is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”
