Naaman, a captain of the army was righteous before God, but he was a leper. His men of war had taken a young girl captive from Israel. She told them that the prophets of Samaria can cure diseases. Naaman spoke with his king about this and he sent him there with ten talents of silver and six thousand pieces of gold, ten festal garments and a letter from his king to the king of Israel. But when the king of Israel read that he should cure him from leprosy, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to kill and make alive! He is seeking to quarrel with me!” When Elisha heard this, he sent to the king to tell him that he wanted Naaman to come to him, so he would know that there is a prophet in Israel. Naaman came with horses and chariots to the door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying that he should wash seven times in the Jordan and his flesh become clean again. But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “I thought he would come out to me and heal me in the name of God. Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, Abanah and Pharpar better than all the rivers of Israel?” He went away in a rage. But Naaman’s servants talked to him. Then he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had commanded. And behold, his flesh was whole again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. So he returned to Elisha and said, “See now, I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Now therefore, please take a gift from your servant.” But Elisha refused. “Go up in peace,” he said to Naaman. And Naaman took his gifts back with him. But after a while Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, ran after him. Naaman came down from the chariot and asked Gehazi, “Is all well?” “Yes,” he said, “but my master sent me to ask you to give a talent of silver for some prophets who have come down from the hills.” Naaman said, “Take two talents of silver in two bags and two festal garments.” He gave these to his two servants who it carried it before him. When Gehazi came to the hill, he took it himself and stored it in the house and he let the men go. As he stood before his master and he asked, “Where did you come from, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant went nowhere.” Elisha said, “Did I not go with you in spirit, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to receive money and garments? You wanted to have olive groves, vineyards, sheep, cattle, and male servants and female servants? Therefore the leprosy of Naaman will cling to you and to your offspring forever.” Gehazi went out from his presence a leper, as white as snow.
