When the Lord wanted to take Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Wait here, because the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” Elisha said, “I will not leave you.” And when they came down to Bethel, the sons of prophets came out to Elisha, and said, “Do you know that the Lord will take away your master?” He answered them, “Yes, I know, but hold your peace.” Elijah said, “Elisha, wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho. ” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, I will not leave you.” At Jericho, the sons of the prophets came to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the Lord will take your master away from you today? Elisha said, “Yes, hold your peace” And Elijah said to Elisha, “Wait here, because the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” Elisha said the same thing, that he would not leave him. And they went on, and as they stood by the Jordan, Elijah took
his mantle, rolled it up and struck the waters with it and the waters were divided. The fifty sons of the prophets watched from afar as they both went over on dry ground. On the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Let a double portion of your spirit be on me!” Elijah said, “You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be so for you; but if not, it will not be so.” As they walked and talked, a chariot of fire with horses of fire came and it separated them. Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” Then he took hold of his clothes and tore them in two pieces. He took up the mantle that had fallen from Elijah and went back to the Jordan, struck the waters with the mantle, and they were divided and he crossed over. The sons of the prophets realized that the spirit of Elijah now rested on Elisha, and they went to meet Elisha and fell down before him. And they said, “See, there are fifty strong men with your servants. Let them go and seek your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and has put him on some mountain or into some valley.” Elisha did not want to, but they urged him and searched for three days after Elijah and did not find him. They returned to Elisha, who was still in Jericho.

The men of the city said, “It is good to live here, but the water is bad and it makes the land unfruitful.” Elisha said, “Bring me a bowl and put salt in it.” They brought it and he went out to the spring, threw salt in it and said, “I have made this water healthy again. There shall be no more death or unfruitfulness.” So it happened according to the saying of the Lord. On the way to Bethel, a large group of boys met him and they mocked him, “Baldhead, baldhead!” And he turned around and cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the children. Then he went to Mount Carmel and then returned to Samaria.
