Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah done. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, “May the gods do to me and more also, if I don’t do to you what you have done to them by tomorrow at this time.” And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life and came to Beersheba in Judah. He left his servant there. And he went into the desert and sat down under a juniper tree to die. “It is enough, O Lord, take my soul now.” He layed down and fell asleep. An angel touched him and said, “Arise and eat!” At his feet lay baked bread and a jar of water. He ate and drank and went to sleep again. “Arise and eat, because you have a long way to go.” And the angel came the second time. And he got up and went in the strength of the food for forty days and nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. He camped in a cave for the night. God’s word came to him, “What are you doing here?” Elijah said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord. Israel has forsaken your covenant, broken down your altars, and killed you prophets with the sword, I alone am left and they seek my life.” The Lord said, “Go out to the mountain before the Lord. And behold, the Lord will pass by. A great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke the rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in it. Then there was a fire, but the Lord was not in it. Then there was a still soft voice. Elijah wrapped his face in his mantle and he went to the entrance of the cave. Then a voice came to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
”Go back on your way to Damascus through the wilderness and anoint Hazael as king over Aram, and Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel, and Elisha, son of Schaphat Abelmeholah to be prophet in your place. And he who escapes from the sword of Hazael will be killed by Jehu. I will reserve seven thousand in Israel who have not bowed their knees to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
Elijah went and found Elisha, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah threw his mantle over Elisha. Elisha took the oxen and ran after Elijah. Elisha said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” Elisha returned and took a yoke of oxen, and killed them, boiled their meat and gave it to the people. Then he arose and followed Elijah.
