So Ahab sent to gathered the people and the prophets. And Elijah came to all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two sides? If God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people didn’t say a word. Elijah said, “I alone am left as a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men. Give us two young bulls and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but no make fire under it. Then I will take the other bull and do the same. Now call on the name of your god, but I will call upon the Lord. And the God who answers by fire is the true God.” And they did as Elijah said. They leaped about the altar they had made and called on Baal. At noon Elijah mocked them, “Cry louder, for he is a god.” They cried aloud and cut themselves according to their rituals until their blood gushed out. They prophesied, but no god answered them.
Elijah said, “Come near to me.” And he rebuilt the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down and took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, “You shall be called Israel.” He built an altar from the stones and made a trench around it. And he prepared the wood and the bull. Now he commanded, “Bring four buckets of water and pour it on the wood and the burnt offering.” He did this three times, so the trench was full of water. Then Elijah came near and cried, “Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known that you are God in Israel and that I, your servant, have done everything according to your word. Hear me Lord, that this people may know you are God and return their hearts to you.” Then the fire fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, wood, stones and dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. When the people saw it, they fell on their faces, and said, “The Lord is God!” But Elijah said, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” And they brought them down to the brook Kishon and killed them.
Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, holding his head between his knees and said to his servant, “Look to the sea”. He went up and saw nothing. Elijah commanded, “Go again.” And so he went seven times. The seventh time, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, rose out of the sea. Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Go down, so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’ ” Soon, the sky was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab went to Israel. And the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah and he tucked his mantle into his belt and ran before Ahab.
