At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick. Then he said to his wife, “Put this on and disguise yourself, so that you won’t be recognized as the wife of Jeroboam. Go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who promised me I would be king over this people. Take ten loaves of bread, cakes and a jar of honey, so he will tell you what will become of the child.”
And she did so and came to Ahijah’s house. Now, he was blind. But the Lord said to him, “Tell her such and such.” When the woman came in, she pretended to be another woman. But Ahijah recognized the sound of her footsteps and called her by her name, the wife of Jeroboam, and told her what she should say to Jeroboam, “He has not done what is pleasing to God, therefore the Lord will bring evil upon Jeroboam and will cut everything off from him and sweep it away as filth. He who dies in the city will be eaten by the dogs and he who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds. So arise, woman, and go home and when your feet enter into the city, the child will die. The Lord will strike Israel, to drive them out of the land. The woman went home and it happened exactly as Ahijah, the servant of God, had spoken.
Jeroboam reigned twenty-two years, then he slept with his fathers.
