And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and made him king. And Rehoboam gathered his entire army, a hundred and eighty thousand fighting men to fight against Israel to bring back to the monarchy. But word of God came to Shemaiah, “Speak to Rehoboam and the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people, saying, ‘You shall not go to fight against your brothers.’ ” And they obeyed the word of God, and went home again. Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and thought that the people would again return to the house of David. So he took counsel and made two golden calves. One he set up in Dan and the other at Bethel, which caused them to sin. He also built high places, and made priests from among all the people. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, he made a feast as in Judah, and sacrificed the golden calves, placed priests in all the high places and Jeroboam went up to the altar.
