Solomon loved many foreign women: the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian and Hittite women, from the nations, who did not love the Lord. Solomon joined to these in love. He had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines who turned his heart away and inclined it after other gods, so that Solomon’s heart was not perfect with his God. He also served Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. Solomon did what displeased the Lord and was not faithful to God, as David was. Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abominable idol of Moab, and to Molech, the idol of the Ammonites. He also made sacrifices to the gods of all this wives.
The Lord was angry with Solomon. God said, “Because you are not doing what I commanded you, I will tear the kingdom from you and give it to one of your servants. But I will not do this in your time, for the sake of David your father, but I will tear it out of your son’s hand. I will give one tribe to your son, for David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, which I have chosen.”
