David said, “I have sinned.” But Nathan said to David, “The Lord has taken away your sin, you will not die. However, because you have given my enemies occasion to blaspheme, your son, who is born to you, will die.”

And the Lord struck Bathsheba’s child and it became very sick. David fasted, but the child died on the seventh day. David’s servants were afraid to tell him the child was dead. But David saw that his servants were whispering. He asked, “Is the child dead?” They said yes. Then David arose, washed, anointed himself, and prayed in the house of the Lord. When he requested meals, his servants asked, “Why are you doing this, now that your child is dead?” David said, “Now he is dead, why should I continue to fast?” He comforted Bathsheba and slept with her. She bore a second son, who was called Solomon. And the Lord loved him. And he placed him in the hands of Nathan the prophet and he named him Jedidiah (Beloved of the Lord).
