Saul had driven the mediums and wizards out of the land after the death of Samuel. The Philistines gathered at Sumera and Saul encamped in Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistines, he was afraid and inquired of God. But God did not answer him. Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a woman who can summon the dead, so I may go to her and inquire of her.” “In Endor there is such a one.” Saul disguised himself and went with two men, and they came to her by night and said, “Consult for me and bring me up whomever I name to you.” But she said, “Why then do you lay a snare for my life, when you know that Saul has driven all mediums and wizards out of the land, to cause me to be killed?” – “As the Lord lives, no punishment will happen to you.” Then she asked him, “Whom shall I bring up to you?” – “Samuel!” Then the woman cried out and recognized Saul. “Don’t be afraid! What do you see?” “An old man in a priest’s robe is coming up…”
