The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance of the tabernacle and said: our father died in the desert and was not among the rebels who rose up against the Lord, the rebels of Korah, instead he died for his own sins and had no sons. Why should our father’s name disappear from his tribe because he had no son? Give us also an inheritance among our father’s brothers. Moses brought their request before the Lord. And the Lord said: the daughters spoke rightly. You shall distribute an inheritance among the brothers of their father and give his to them. Moses said to the Israelites: when someone dies and has no son their daughter shall be given his inheritance.
If he has no daughter it shall be given to his brother. If he has no brother it shall be given to the brother of his father. If his father has no brother it shall be given to his closest relative among his tribe. This is to be judgment and law in Israel.
