Elisha came to Damascus. And Ben Hadad lay sick in bed. The king sent Hazael with gifts to the man of God to inquire of him whether he would recover again. He brought forty camels’ burden to Elisha. When he arrived, he asked if Ben Hadad would recover. Elisha said, “Go tell him, “You will recover.’ However the Lord has shown me that he will die.” And Elisha fixed his gaze on him and wept. Hazael said, “Why are you weeping?” Elisha said, “I know what you’re going to do to the children of Israel. You will burn their cities and slay the young men, kill the children and rip up their pregnant women.”
Hazael said, “What is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do such a thing?” Elisha answered, “The Lord has shown me that you will be king of Aramea.” Hazael departed and returned to the king. He said to the king, “You will recover!” But the next day he dipped a cloth in water and spread it over the king’s face, until he died, and Hazael became king in his place.
In the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel – Jehoshaphat was still king of Judah – Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign. He was thirty-two years old and reigned eight years in Jerusalem. He walked in the way of Ahab, whose daughter was his wife. He did what displeased the Lord. But the Lord would not destroy Judah for David’s sake, because he promised to give him and his children a lamp.
At that time, the Edomites revolted from Judah and chose a king of their own. And Joram went to Zair and all his chariots with him and at night he struck down the Edomites who had surrounded him and also the captains, so that the people fled to their homes.
So the Edomites have revolted to this day. Libnah also revolted. Joram died and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. Ahaziah became king in his place in the twelfth year of Joram. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel. He walked in the way of Ahab and did what displeased the Lord, but he went with Joram against Hazael at Ramoth in Gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram, who returned to Jezreel to heal. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went to see Joram because he was sick.
