Not contained in the Hebrew canon
In the Septuagint it is even inserted between Jeremiah and the Lamentations (the first five chapters)
The evident randomness of this book has however some sections in it:
1. Introduction written – 200 B.C. (Hebrew)
2. Prayer for mercy by the banished – 180 B.C. Greek
3. Paean for Wisdom – Greek
4. Messages of comfort
It remains only a hypothesis that this book was written by Jeremiah’s secretary and friend to whom he had dictated in Babylon the scrolls that were destroyed. In any case it provides enlightening information about the religious life of the churches of the diaspora.
